Sunroom Addition

The Client had an old wood deck, that was not only rotten, but also completely clogged with vines. So they decided that it had to go and that a closed in deck would be nice in its place. This would be more useful, as this is an area with lots of mosquitoes and other annoying bugs.

So we started by putting a slab down. Not knowing where we were going at this point, the slab was dug and laid to match the existing building's slab, and to meet local code requirements. Then over the following two years, we put pen to paper to design the structure. After going back and forward with ideas, and nailing down a budget, we formulated a plan. The plan was designed in CAD, and costing was done.

Construction of the "Sunroom Addition" was started during the hot and humid Kentucky summertime. We had decided to mimic the original addition built 20 years prior, adding a hip roof profile to the new west end. It was decided that to keep the look fluid, the outdated aluminium siding on the old addition would be replaced at the same time with the concrete fiber board siding used to wrapping the new addition.

The structure being a sunroom, asked for lots of glass. A double French door set was installed on the south side, and a single glass door on the north. Access to room comes from a new cut doorway from the old addition. We had replaced the south side outside door from the old addition with a window, allowing us to use the door in the sunroom's north side. All windows are Double Glazed, Low-E, Argon Filled, PVC units, as are the doors, with the exception of the old door to the north side.

It was decided not to add HVAC at this point, however it was wired for that in mind. Plenty of electric outlets were installed. Lighting includes two tracks in the vaulted ceiling, and a security spotlight to each outside corner. A large ceiling fan is set at the ceiling peak. The interior is skinned with pine tongue and grove boards, walls and ceiling. With all trim being flat pine stock. It was left untreated. The floor was tiled to match the tiled floor recently installed in the old addition. Replacing the 20 year old carpet.

The old addition had a face lift also. Removing the window, and its hotel type PTAC HVAC unit, on the north side, prior to wrapping. Then book cases were custom built down the entire wall. With the whole room being painted, and stained.

One of the clients, being an avid gardener, spend many hours in the sunroom's pleasant environment. During the cold winter, the critical plants find a home in the sunroom as well.
